Truffle farmer Damian Robinson is striding along a line of hazelnut trees, charting the mysteriously symbiotic relationships in the fungal world, when he offers a theory: “We are one chromosome removed from a pig and that’s probably why we like the smell of truffles so much.”

The truffle’s aroma has been described as being somewhere between sex and old socks, but aficionados are prepared to pay big money for the delicacy.

Seduced by Simplicity ✨✨

Michael and Michele Bell turned a sixties beach house into a stunning seaside home that’s too good to leave.

While the restoration of their beach house is an ongoing project, the couple has been mindful to retain a laid-back coastal vibe and stay true to the sixties detailing.

The Bells have been respectful of the home’s era and searched out finishes and fittings that suited. Michael installed a timber-panelled, copper-painted feature wall in a downstairs sitting room, while Michele tracked down tiles and fabrics that fitted the sixties vibe.

“I guess the era always held the attraction of a simpler lifestyle,” Michele says. “That’s certainly what we have achieved with our move to Kiama. We may have intended it to be an interlude, but it’s hard to imagine ever returning to live in the city now.”

When Annie and Chris Jones bought Glenrock, they inherited a splendid garden. They’ve devoted considerable effort to improving the legacy.

It wasn’t the house, but the garden that entranced Annie and Chris when they first inspected the property. It had been owned for almost 25 years by landscape designer Carolyn Robinson and she was responsible for integrating an English-style parkland into an iconic Australian bush setting.

Mateship and Mullets 📚🎓📍

The pandemic lockdowns revealed hidden reserves of resourcefulness in many communities, including the close-knit boarding cohort at Melbourne’s Xavier College.

The boarding house went to great lengths to provide extra care for the students, including arranging click-and-collect deliveries of necessities and the odd treat and lots of on-campus recreational activities.

“We were mindful of keeping the boys healthy physically as well as mentally,” Xavier’s head of boarding Alexander Smith explains. “We had a strength and conditioning coach come in to monitor everyone’s wellbeing and we organised a lot of games and diversions to keep everyone occupied. In fact, I think many of the day students were envious of the boarders, because they were missing out on the social interaction.”

The mullet haircut may be a divisive fashion look but for boarding students at Melbourne’s Xavier College, it was a unifying statement that helped them support each other through the recent COVID-19 lockdowns.

Community service is one of the school’s core values, and with students’ opportunities to participate in their regular activities such as volunteering at a soup kitchen and helping with a study support group for disadvantaged school children curtailed by the pandemic, they decided to face the clippers as a group activity.

Students at Melbourne's Caulfield Grammar School have outstanding opportunities to be involved in community and personal development projects as part of their middle school years.

Caulfield Grammar School’s year 10 student Ed Cunningham decided to hold a pink-themed barbecue for breast cancer in the school’s boarding house. To attract the largest possible audience for his event and maximise donations, Ed gained permission to offer the ultimate prize for his boarding school peers — the chance of a weekday sleep-in and two tickets to the movies

At the end of his event, Ed had not only nailed the basics of a successful fundraiser, but he was able to donate $450 to his chosen charity, all provided by guests at his event, which included students and staff from Morcom House, the Caulfield campus boarding facility.
