The Art of the Find

There is a particular pleasure in finding something you didn’t know you were looking for.

An old farmhouse table bearing the marks of countless family meals. A beautifully worn leather chair. A piece of studio pottery, or an eccentric object whose original purpose is no longer entirely clear. These are the finds that give a home its character, because they have lived a life before arriving in ours.

Since 2009, Dirty Janes has celebrated this love of objects with history. What began in Bowral has grown into three family-owned vintage and artisan emporiums; Bowral, Canberra and Orange, bringing together more than 257 independent stallholders.

Each stallholder brings a different eye. One may specialise in French provincial furniture or Australian country pieces; another in mid-century design, garden wares, vintage fashion, jewellery, books, records or curious collectables. Alongside the antiques sit works by contemporary makers, made with the same individuality and intention that makes older pieces worth keeping.

It makes every visit unpredictable.

For Dirty Janes, collecting has always been about the slow accumulation of things that speak to us: pieces found on weekends away, inherited from family, discovered beneath a stack of something else, or chosen simply because they make us smile.

Country homes have always understood this instinct. They evolve rather than arrive fully formed, mixing the practical with the beautiful and the humble with the remarkable. Timber grows richer, linen softens, metals develop a patina, and well-made objects become more compelling with age.

The best pieces rarely date. They carry their past lightly and find a new purpose in contemporary life.

At Dirty Janes there is no prescribed route and no guarantee of what you will find, so it pays to allow the better part of a day. Bowral has the Highlands Tea Company for tea blended on site and the most delicious high teas; Canberra and Orange have Salters for coffee and lunch.

The only certainty is that the most memorable discovery will be the one you never intended to take home.
