Roses – How to select the perfect one for your garden

Roses are a beautiful addition to your garden, easy to grow and remarkably tolerant. However, with a little extra care and attention your roses can really thrive.

With Australia being such a vast country with many microclimates, you will find that not all roses will suit every climate, position, or use. We find that if a rose is not suited to its environment, it may produce poor flowers, minimal growth and be more susceptible to disease.

At Treloar Roses we have listed our top three tips, that we believe to be most important when choosing the roses that will perform the best in your garden.

Roses – How to select the perfect one for your garden

Tip no 1.   Location, Climate, and position in the garden.

Roses need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight – They will survive with less but will be spindly and produce less flower.  Consider the position and how much sun it will get all year round.

Tip no 2.   Size, Habit and Features.

SOIL PH. – Roses need a ph. of 6.5 – they can handle a bit each side but not the extremes. An incorrect pH. will restrict the plants access to nutrients, resulting in a rose that will not thrive or produce the flowers you expect.

Watering is the most important factor to growing healthy roses. In the first year after planting, we recommend roses receive a deep water, approx. ten litres of water, two to three times a week.

Tip no 3.   Disease Resistant.

Treloar’s Health Rating – here at our farm we assess our plants for disease resistance to black spot and powdery mildew. They are then given a score out of five, with FIVE STARS being the most resistant.

Roses – How to select the perfect one for your garden

Finally, it is good to take note of gardens around you that are successfully growing roses and then speak to the gardeners for home remedies and local knowledge. Also contact your local Rose Societies This can be invaluable to home gardeners, however, make sure to only try the advice on one plant first before using on your entire garden.
